Early career investigator (ECI):
Short biography of member:
David Garcia-Dorado Garcia, MD, PhD, cardiologist. His scientific career has focused on the field of ischemic heart disease, with the main aim of attenuating the consequences of myocardial ischemia on heart function and patient’s survival and quality of life. During the last 30 years, his laboratory has been instrumental in establishing the molecular and cellular mechanisms responsible for cell death and dysfunction caused by myocardial ischemia and reperfusion, and to establish the basis for its possible prevention through pharmacological interventions. Some of the most relevant contributions of this laboratory are the mechanisms of cardiomyocyte hypercontracture and its role in reperfusion injury, the roles of mitochondrial-sarcoplasmic reticulum communication, calpain activation, NO - cGMP –PKG signaling, and regulation of cellular pH and volume, and Cx43 gap-junction mediated cell-to-cell communication and mitochondrial localization of Cx43. New research lines include combination therapy for reperfusion injury, metabolic interventions, remote ischemic conditioning signaling and new mitochondrial targets for cardioprotection other that the permeability transition pore, and molecular mechanisms of cardiomyocyte ageing.
In the clinical arena, David Garcia-Dorado has conducted randomized clinical trials to evaluate cardioprotective treatments in patients, has contributed to the development of new diagnostic techniques (such as the assessment of myocardial edema by magnetic resonance imaging) and to the development of treatments aimed at decreasing adverse remodeling of the heart in survivors to an infarct. In relation to arterial and coronary disease, and has made significant contributions in relation to the role of platelets and the effects of antithrombotic treatments, and is directing an ambitious multidisciplinary program aiming at the precise evaluation assessment of cardiovascular risk in diabetic patients.
David Garcia-Dorado has published more than 300 articles in international journals, the vast majority of them in relation to ischemic heart disease and reperfusion injury. He has been chair of the Working Group of the European Society of Cardiology on Cellular Biology of the Heart, member of the European Council of the International Society for Cardiac Research (ISHR) and co-Editor for 10 years of the journal Cardiovascular Research. He has been co-Director of an international doctorate school on myocardial reperfusion in cooperation with the Justus Liebeg Universitat (Giessen, GE), and Chairman of the Scientific Committee and Research Director of Vall d'Hebron Hospital Research Institute . He is has been since 2000 scientific director of the Spanish Network for Cooperative Cardiovascular Research (RETICS ISCiii), and is Head of the Cardiology Department and Coordinator of the Research Area of Vascular Biology and Metabolism of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR)
